Firefighters, Doctors and Nurses with the Highest Salary Drop in the State

The average monthly income of state workers, which includes not only gross wages, before deductions, but also subsidies, premiums and allowances, amounted to 1,819 euros in April, an increase of 0.1% compared to the previous month. -on-year, according to the Public Employment Summary, released yesterday. DN /Dinheiro Vivo took into account the evolution of the number of civil servants – which stood at 741,698 in June – and salaries and verified that expenditure with these allowances remained virtually unchanged since April last year at 1.3 billion euros per month.

Of the occupations with the largest drop in income compared to the previous quarter, the focus is on firefighters, who saw their average monthly income fall by 4.8% to 1633 euros, for nurses, who recorded a 1.9% wage drop to 1786 euros , and for inspection personnel who lost 1.1% of their income and now earn about 2521 euros. But if we analyze last year’s pay in homologous terms, the medical career was the most sacrificed, with a salary loss of 2.9%: in April 2021, a doctor from the National Health Service (SNS) received an average of 3707 euros. A year later, the average profit dropped to 3600 euros, a loss of more than 100 euros.

Conversely, some careers made gains. Compared to the previous quarter, notaries stand out with the largest increase, from 1.8%, to 4,457 euros, followed by the municipal police, with a wage increase of 1.6% to 1,633 euros. Comparing the data to April 2021, the highest wage increases also go to these last two occupations mentioned above, with increases of 4.7% and 4.8% respectively. Also notable is the 3.7% salary growth for diplomats to €8,984 – in fact the highest average monthly income in the public administration – and the pay of operational assistants, laborers and auxiliary staff, which increased by 3.5% to 905 euros . In the latter case, the increase is explained by the combined effect “of updating the guaranteed minimum monthly remuneration and the value of the salary base to 705 euros”, explains the Directorate-General for Administration and Public Employment (DGAEP).

Values for the lowest-paid positions in the state do not yet reflect the additional increase of 47.55 that will be paid to technical and operations assistants this month, effective January 1, 2022.

Delay hiring

An additional 10,885 workers entered the state in June, a 1.5% increase compared to the same period in 2021. There are a total of 741,698 workers, the highest number since 2011, according to the Public Employment Survey. Still, state employment growth is slowing, as the previous quarter’s increase was also 2.2% year on year.

The 1.5% increase in government employment, compared to the same period in 2021, was mainly due to the 1.1% increase in the central government workforce, corresponding to 6,263 additional jobs, and the local government, which created 2,954 additional jobs, a growth of 2.3%, justifies the report.
In central government, the increase in employment mainly occurred in primary and secondary education institutions, which employed an additional 2,660 workers, in public business units of the National Health Service (SNS), which employed an additional 2,074 workers. , and in the education and research organizations, which strengthened their workforce with 1,601 new employees.

If we compare this data with the first quarter of this year, we see that the increase in government employment was much less pronounced, at 0.1%, which corresponds to 550 additional jobs. In this case, it was mainly the increase in local government recruitment (1213 additional jobs), namely in the municipal councils, where 901 additional workers were employed, that stimulated employment growth, as there was a decline in the central government of 912 employees, 0.2% less than in the previous quarter.

This decrease, compared to the previous quarter, in employment in the central services of the State was mainly registered in the public health domain, resulting in the loss of 1460 jobs, namely in the careers of doctors, operational assistants and nurses. In the opposite direction, at the Internal Administration, another 1,289 professionals were added as a result of the temporary recruitment of forest rangers, which are seasonal in nature, as well as GNR rangers.
