Duc Wieggers is the owner of Wieggers Metaalwerken and is an independent entrepreneur. It manufactures, among other things, interior doors and steel balconies. “The past few weeks have been a bit quieter in terms of calls from people who want to plan a first date,” he says.
Not immediately a problem, because there are still many tasks. But it makes you think. “Such a steel door is a plus for people. And now that everything is becoming more expensive, the question is whether the orders will continue to come.”
Who pays the price difference?
Builders are also concerned about price increases. The question is: who pays the price difference? The Bouwend Nederland association of construction companies is holding a webinar this week that quickly attracted 400 people. “There are so many questions about that,” says Richard Massar, spokesperson for Bouwend Nederland.
“The construction sector has been struggling with extreme price increases and delivery problems for a year and a half. And this is exacerbated by the war in Ukraine.” Projects can be tricky. “Contracts can sometimes no longer be made for the agreed price.”
Alternative building materials
Make sure you work together, says Bouwend Nederland. “We presented the construction industry with a clause that allows you to conclude agreements with new deals about the possible consequences of working. And there are possibilities without this substance. But above all, stay in touch.” says Masser. “Maybe you should start delivery gradually, finish it differently, or look for alternative building materials.”
Duc Wieggers and Martin Suijker clearly do not expect the latter. But they dare not guess what will happen to these prices. Suijker doesn’t see that very well: “I think the price will go up again by the summer.” Wieggers is a bit more optimistic: “I think the situation in Ukraine will stabilize one day.”
