Antwerp has big ambitions

Antwerp forced a promotion to the Belgian top in the 2016/2017 season and was later taken over by the rich Belgian Paul Gheysens, who had big plans for the club presidency.

The ambitious Antwerp resident has been at the top for several years and is once again represented in Europe. In 2020, the four-time Belgian champion won the cup tournament.

In the 2019/2020 season, AZ again played against Antwerp in the play-offs of the Europa League. Alkmaarders then advanced to the group stage, beating the Belgians in two games.

Overmars must lead Antwerp to greater success. This will be his first foreign venture for the former international player, who began his coaching career in 2009 with the Go Ahead Eagles.

In the summer of 2012, Overmars became director of football affairs at Ajax. The Amsterdammers were delighted with his performance and extended his contract last summer until mid-2026, but the successful director fell hard from his pedestal a few months later.
