In 1954, two emerging designers competed for the Woolmark Prize: one was Yves Saint Laurent, the other Karl Lagerfeld. The designer who revolutionized Fendi and Chanel passed away in 2019 after leaving a huge stylistic legacy and an indelible mark on fashion. For this reason, the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of New York has decided to dedicate its next exhibition to “Kaiser Karl”: it will be titled “Karl Lagerfeld: A beauty line”and the opening, like every year, will coincide with the Met Gala.
The exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”
Nomination is for May 2023: 150 Karl Lagerfeld original looks will be displayed at the Costume Institute in New York with the related sketches. Lagerfeld was a visionary and prolific genius: during his long career he designed for Balmain, for Patou, for Chloé before moving on to Fendi and Chanel, a brand he transformed from a Maison for chic ladies into an object of collective desire. Karl Lagerfeld had also founded a line of the same name, still active: “We cannot imagine a more touching and meaningful way to honor his colossal achievements. – said CEO Pier Paolo Righi – both for the long-term impact it had about fashion and how it is shaping the future“.
The Met Gala 2023 theme
An exhibition at the Met is one of the highest accolades for a designer, but Karl Lagerfeld believed that fashion should never be in museums. Andrew Bolton, chief curator of the Costume Institute, recalled one of his most famous aphorisms: “Fashion is not art, fashion belongs to the street, to women’s bodies, to men’s bodies.” Therefore, he argues, they have imagined a unique exhibition, unlike any other: the exhibition will be open from May 5 to July 16, 2023 and will be anticipated, as every year, by the already famous Costume Institute Benefit of the Known. Or, to put it simply, Met Gala. The date is official: Monday, May 1, 2023. The theme, at this time, too: it is tradition that each Met Ball has a theme linked to the exhibition that opens at the New York Museum. Stars, models and guests will be spoiled for choice: in six decades of career, Karl Lagerfeld left behind an immense production of clothes and styles that still influence designers today.
