A shorter and simplified ceremony, mirroring a less opulent monarchy, in tune with the times. The coronation of King Charles III will take place on Saturday, May 6, inwestminster abbey and the new ruler will show the world how he intends to live his role. Judging by the details that have emerged in recent days, Charles III wants to turn the page and look to the future: the coronation will respect secular traditions, but the form will be “updated”, starting from dress code. Through the tiaras and ermine furs, in all probability we will see tights and elegant dresses, yes, but contemporary.

What will the new coronation ceremony look like?

More than 70 years have passed since the last coronation of an English monarch: in 1952 it was Elizabeth who broke with tradition, listening to the wise advice of her husband Philip, allowing television to broadcast part of the ceremony live. In seventy years, however, the world has changed. Charles III’s coronation ceremony will have to carry the weight of the crown, its rites and traditions, in the age of social networks and the Metaverse. The ceremony can last as little as an hour (instead of three) and guests will be “limited” to two thousand, less than a third of the mother’s original guest list. Camilla will also be crowned Queen Consort, alongside her.

The dress code for the coronation of Charles III

The most obvious changes, however, will be in the dress code and the preparation of the ceremony: Carlos III wants to abolish unnecessary pomp: in all probability the guests will be seated in “classical” chairs and not in velvet armchairs. The dress code is also expected to change: women will not wear tiaras, but hats, while couples will be excused from wearing the “crowning blankets” with ermine robes and medieval-style robes. A tight one will do just fine, if not a full suit.

Among the many unknowns is the role of the media: Elizabeth II chose not to show the cameras the most sacred moments of the event, such as the consecration with oil. Will Carlos III be revolutionary in this too?
