Carlo Conti expresses himself in the white face of Samira Lui
Right at the end of Samira’s performance, the presenter of Rai 1 wanted to express himself about what, if we want, could be defined”white face”, to avoid the emergence of possible controversies. “I just want to say one important thing, why a few years ago we couldn’t be black singers anymorebecause this Samira who is black is also here to play many black singers,” Conti explained to the audience. “That’s because, in short, there is this sensitivity of blackface. As Samira is black and played a white singer, I hope no white person is offended by the ‘white face’ tonight”.
When Rai put a stop to the black face
In 2021, Carlo Conti’s program was accused of instigating racism bringing to the stage the technique of the “black face”, a practice that goes back to the custom of whites to paint their faces dark to imitate the traits and characteristics of blacks with a derisory intention. Several protests followed after some performances, most notably that of Ghali, who complained of a disrespectful imitation. So, Rai decided to put a stop to their broadcasts, inviting them to abandon the practice of network entertainment.
