The design for Palazzo Trussardi

A team of architects, artists and designers from the Berlin-based architecture studio bplus.xyz, in collaboration with Thorben Gröbel, defined the design for the new Palazzo Trussardi. The historic building houses the Milanese fashion house’s flagship store and two spaces dedicated to the palate, CafĂ© Trussardi and Restaurante Trussardi, led by star chef Giancarlo Perbellini. The historicity of the building, with its masonry skeleton, was the starting point for the remodeling of Palazzo Trussardi.

The new flagship store

In the renovation project, bplus.xyz valued the structure of the building, with its material simplicity, in contrast to the contemporary design of the accessories: “The building was there before us and will be there after us – tell the architects of Berlin – We want to challenge the paradigm of the longevity of retail stores, which goes from 3 to 5 years, starting from the understanding of what already exists in the space and what will continue to exist in the future.🇧🇷

The Trussardi flag shop, as Milanese and visitors remembered, was removed, with its layers of plastic and plasterboard, like a patina of time to be restored.

How Café Trussardi changes

The idea of bringing out material honesty and the building’s history guided the entire project. Palazzo Trussardi was Italy’s first vertical hanging garden, designed by Patrick Blanc, and on the CafĂ©’s covered terrace the iconic green mark of the old project was maintained, wanting to create a link between Trussardi’s past and present.

Inside, a 25-metre long mirror, placed diagonally, divides the space of the CafĂ© Trussardi store and reflects the Piazza della Scala as if creating a continuum between the Maison’s past, present and future.

News from the Trussardi Restaurant

On the first floor of Palazzo Trussardi is the iconic Trussardi restaurant led by Giancarlo Perbellini. The space is in continuity with the shop and Café Trussardi, as well as the world of gastronomy and fashion for Trussardi, through a visual connection in the center of the building. The lighting also changes according to the floor and environment, shifting from cooler tones in the store to warmer light in the restaurant and blending in with the natural light from the outside balcony. In the new Trussardi Restaurant, a private room is added for more intimate events.

The reuse of Palazzo Trussardi

Within the project, a series of constructive elements such as stainless steel frames and shelves were also reused in a recycling and reuse concept very expensive for bplus.xyz. Thorben Gröbel has revitalized some old and obsolete elements, giving them a new function such as steel tubes used as hangers and benches made from shipyard waste.

The displays were created by reusing leather seats and car doors with a visible patina of stains and wrinkles to continue that wonderful dialogue between past, present and future that Maison Trussardi continues to pursue.
