they called her “the unsinkable Molly Brown”because she survived the disaster of Titanic🇧🇷 But while the story of the cruise ship sunk by an iceberg is common knowledge, Margaret “Molly” Brown slowly fell into oblivion. However, she was one of the heroes of the sinking: she rowed the people in her lifeboat out of the maelstrom, helped search for the missing, and created a committee to help the survivors financially. The blockbuster movie james cameron🇧🇷 Titanicmade her character famous (played by actress Kathy Bates) but her story deserves a separate chapter: philanthropist, activist, emancipated and capable woman, Molly Brown paid the price of being a woman born ahead of her time.

Who Was Margaret Brown: Life Before the Titanic

In Italy Margaret Brown is a name unknown to most, but in the United States she is a very well known and popular character: born as Margaret Tobin, she is known by her married name (Brown) and is also called Molly or Maggie, her nicknames. Daughter of Irish emigrants, she started working at a very young age in a tobacco factory. Even after her marriage to the wealthy James Joseph Brown, she remained busy: despite having achieved wealth, she put herself at the service of her community, organizing mess halls for miners and helping children in difficulty. Nonconformist and emancipated, she approached the suffragist movement and joined the Denver Women’s Club, which she promoted female education🇧🇷 She went to school herself (which she couldn’t do as a girl) and thought about entering politics: she ran for the US Senate in 1909 and 1914, well before women could vote. An eclectic and lively character, who she paid for the guilt of being born before her time.

The True Story of Molly Brown, Heroine of the Titanic

Margaret Brown loved travel and social life: she was in Egypt when a letter informed her of her nephew’s illness. So Molly returned to France and boarded the first ship available to the United States: the Titanic. The rest is history: in the hectic hours of the tragedy she was not discouraged and before getting into the boat she wanted to look for those who were left behind. Legend tells of a heated argument with the sailor who was supposed to lead them to safety: some say it was because he was too scared to row, while others argue that she wanted to get back at all costs (a bit like Rose in the movie). Margaret, however, took the lead and rowed the boat out of the maelstrom, carrying the passengers to safety. She spoke three languages, so she helped make lists of survivors, but was not allowed to testify about the disaster, despite her crucial help. Later she made her assets available to assist the survivors, creating an economic fund. France in 1932 awarded him the Legion of Honor for his philanthropic work. Maybe someone, given the success that the movie Titanic continues to have after many years, decides to make a movie about her…
