This is the house that was bought by Andy Warhol in 1970 and where the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat lived until his death in 1988. Jean-Michel Basquiat’s New York home in his final years, which the artist had rented from his friend and colleague Andy Warhol, occupies an area of ​​about 600 square meters spread over three levels. Basquiat moved into the loft at 57 Great Jones Street in 1983, renting it from his idol. In 1985 an art dealer introduced the two artists to collaborate and they did until Basquiat’s death. An artistic partnership that is still extraordinary today.

Basquiat, half Haitian and half Puerto Rican, ran away from home at 16 and began his artistic career selling hand-painted postcards to tourists. He was part of a band and the neighborhood where the house is located was famous for being the headquarters of Paolo Antonio Vaccarelli, better known as Paul Kelly, one of the most famous gangsters in New York history who opened the New Brighton in 1904 Athletic Club Kelly financed the infamous Five Points Gang, which also included Lucky Luciano and Al Capone.

In 1905, a gang shootout led to the closure of the site at 57 Great Jones Street, which became first a metalworking business, then a kitchen supply business before being bought in 1970 by Andy Warhol. Today, at 57 Great Jones Street, there is a Japanese restaurant and bar, called Bohemian New York, in addition to the historic Basquiat apartment rented by the Meridian Capital Group.
