There real family is famous for its very strict rules of protocol, but what few know is that, according to etiquette, there are some things that are absolutely forbidden to members of the Windsor house. Whether it’s a matter of security or simple bon-ton, it doesn’t matter: according to the dictates imposed at court, royals cannot have physical contact with their subjects, take selfies and sign autographs. Here are the more or less bizarre prohibitions imposed on the palace.
sign autographs – Among the things absolutely forbidden to Royals is not being able to sign autographs. The reason is very simple: to preserve the secrecy and security of court documents, since, if the signature falls into the wrong hands, it could be used for fraud and identity theft.
travel together – The direct heirs to the throne can never travel together in the same means of transport. Whether by plane, car, boat or train, it doesn’t matter, it serves to prevent the crown from being without a sovereign. Currently, therefore, those involved in the ban are King Charles III, Prince William and their son George.
Traveling without a black suit in the suitcase – When Royals travel, they must always bring a black suit with them. The reason? They must be ready for sudden grief. If something happened to one of the family members, therefore, they would have the right look to perform in public.
Using nicknames in public – In addition to Mom and Dad, any nicknames are prohibited in public for members of the royal family. Queen Elizabeth herself did not call herself Lilibet, the only one authorized to use the term of endearment was her husband, Prince Philip.
use social networks – Royals cannot have private social profiles, the only accounts they receive are official ones which are managed by a dedicated team. The only one for whom an exception was made to the rule? Princess Eugenia.
take selfies – According to royal protocol, selfies would be prohibited, but William and Kate do not hesitate to break this rule. In fact, both intend to reveal a less formal image of the monarchy.
accepting gifts – Although subjects often bring gifts to royalty, the latter cannot accept them for reasons of safety and etiquette.
Play board games at Christmas – Board games are absolutely prohibited at royal Christmas lunches and dinners. The rule dates back to 2008, when the Duke of York called the pastime “cruel”.
go vote – The reason royals can’t vote? The English Constitution guaranteed political neutrality for members of the ruling family. The Windsors, in fact, cannot even run for political office.
use french terms – The Royals can never use a list of 16 words, especially when in public. Among the prohibited terms, there are mainly French terms, such as pardon and toilette.
