Master of creative play. Six champions from the previous two editions take to the field to keep things serious, in a studio decorated with talking reindeer, gigantic advent calendars and treacherous fireplaces. LOL Christmas Specialavailable December 19th on Prime Video, is series A of Italian comedy, side of improvisation. We found three champions from the first season, Michela Giraud, Frank Matano and Lillo, along with two from the second: Mago Forest and Maria Di Biase. As a joker, Mara Maionchi also enters the race because anything goes at Christmas. None of the contestants just do their homework and complete the list of gifts we didn’t even expect to find under the tree. LOL Christmas special: anyone (not) laughing is out.
It could have been an exercise in good manners, a sterile re-proposition of what had worked in the two previous editions and that’s it, Happy Holidays. In LOL Xmas Special, however, it is present a love of compulsive laughter that drags the viewer into a whirlwind of insanity, giving you the opportunity to celebrate Holy Christmas with a reunion between irresistible carrion.
🇧🇷Those who have no nights are reunited“, exclaims the Magician Forest at the beginning of the episode which, unlike what happens in the canonical seasons, lasts an hour and a quarter. None of the definitive game time, however, is indigestible zeppola: every second of the special is pure entertainment, in full focus. And this is the fundamental difference with the 2022 edition: here the comedians called to (not) laugh, have serious fun, as if they were among longtime friends. Indeed, they are.
If the healthy desire for extemporaneous improvisation was lacking in Season 2, here it reappears in all its evil power. Frank Matano “Your Worst Enemy” Makes Himself Laugh, proposing facets and objects that occasionally create a Lappish shudder in everyone present, except him. And the effect is, once again, thrilling. From perfect competitor to perfect competitor, here is Maria Di Biase who even manages to quote Avatar, surfing the right wave. His Tekken-style challenge between Pandoro and Panettone (no spoilers, but Lillo has something to do with it) is the Christmas brawl we deserved to see even more than the mythological rivalry between Kevin and the party thieves in Home Alone. In its own way, it is already a cult.
Michela Giraud, all shivering, reveals how, after her participation in the show, people stopped her on the street exclaiming: “But you are… the dwarf bitch!”, victim of her own catchphrase, that jewel of music and irreverence that was the “Crazy Mignottone”. Mara Maionchi, as always, gets lost. There’s no other way to define the former X Factor judge’s attitude towards the show. And also everything we want to see from her, always. The Mago Forest version “Exploring the human body” is another unmissable gem of the show. The only sore point remains Fedez, still convinced that convulsive laughter is enough to lead.
LOL Xmast Special is the ugly Christmas sweater, perfect for the holidays. Certainly bodes well for LOL 3 coming next year. Good resolutions for the new year: no one dares to lower the bullshit bar by a single millimeter compared to this holiday installment. We’ve seen plenty of stuffed comedians who didn’t understand the game: LOL is meant to be overwhelming, improvised, and over-the-top beyond the bounds of the surreal. Otherwise coal for everyone.
