There Christmas Eve it’s turning the corner and it’s time to take the skirts out of the closet tartan🇧🇷 There scottish pattern in fact, it’s a must-have in the winter wardrobe, especially on vacation. Also this year, the catwalks celebrated the plaid print with British charm: from Roberto Cavalli for burberryuntil Vivienne Westwood, which made it a fashion classic. But why is this costume so popular at Christmas?
How tartan was born and what it has to do with Christmas
Every year, in December, the plaid pattern returns among the season’s trends and in the wardrobe of stars. Proof? Kate Middleton she rocked a checkered Burberry dress on Dec. 1, punctual as clockwork. The English royal family is very attached to tartan, so much so that Queen Elizabeth had her own costume. However, this association is quite modern: chess was born in Scottish Highlands and it was used by the heads of clans, who recognized each other thanks to the different colors.
The “modern” kilt, that is, the pleated skirt, was born in the 18th century and was considered a political symbol of independence and a manifesto of rebellion. Over the centuries, things have changed and tartan has become one of the most celebrated trends in fashion, also thanks to the punk and to Westwood itself. Its geographic origin, however, continues to link it to the cold and winter wardrobe.
Tartan can have many textures and colors, but there is a true “Christmas Tartan” with green and gold checks on a red background and is the most used in this period. The colors immediately recall the symbols of Christmas and the warmth of the domestic hearth, but some more poetic interpretations associate them with gold, incense and myrrh, in other words, with the traditional gifts of the Magi.
How to wear tartan while on vacation
From the bon tone look Chanel to the urban declines of Off white, to the haute couture runways of Dior, tartan is the absolute star of winter trends in all its forms. A plaid coat, like the ones proposed by Roberto Cavalliit is the perfect anti-cold ally for the Christmas holidays: festive and cheerful.
For Christmas lunch, a full plaid skirt paired with a black sweater or a mini dress worn over a turtleneck is perfect. The glamorous variant? The double-breasted jacket to be worn with a white shirt and bow tie. The Christmas costume is solved: now you can enjoy the festive atmosphere with mulled wine and cinnamon cookies!
