Lapland’s iconic Icehotel has been given a new lease of life in its 33rd year. It is not a simple and common hotel with rooms and suites, but a true work of art made of ice created in the small village of Jukkasjärvi, in the north of Sweden. Every year, when the Torne River freezes over, its clear waters are used as material for the construction of the new Icehotel, conceived as a symposium of ice creators and artists from all over the world.
The first ice and snow hotel
The village of Jukkasjärvi is located on the banks of the Torne River, 17 kilometers from Kiruna. Every year, 24 traditionally selected artists come together in Jukkasjärvi to build rooms that are true sensory experiences, original and unique works of art that represent the new Icehotel. The facility uses only natural ice from the Torne River, which is one of the last clear rivers in Europe.
520 kilometers long, the Torne River flows from the ancient mountains in western Sweden to the coast in the east, where it flows into the Bay of Bothnia. When the Icehotel melts in summer, the snis, a mixture of snow and ice used to build the hotel, flows back into the river in a continuous cycle.
The new ice hotel
Eighteen artistic suites are created each year for the new Icehotel, in addition to the permanent hotel and icebar that welcomes guests year-round. The weather in Jukkasjärvi in November and December can reach -30°C, ideal for building a new snow and ice hotel that runs on solar energy. An ice dome, giant mushrooms and video game-inspired figures are just some of the artistic creations created this year for the Icehotel, which in the 2022/2023 edition required the consideration of 10 Olympic snis pools.
How much does Icehotel cost?
Every year around 70,000 guests from all over the world visit the Icehotel. The hotel offers two ways to spend the night, in the artistic ice and snow suites or in the cozy cabins of the permanent Icehotel. The temperature in the cold rooms never drops below -5 degrees Celsius and guests are provided with everything they need to spend a night in a chilled room. Sleeping at the Icehotel costs between 660 euros and 1400 euros per night for the most precious artistic suite.
