Launched in 1990, directed by Chris Columbus, the comedy “Mom I missed the plane” has a tiny Macaulay Culkin as the protagonist and, in addition to stratospheric collections, the film was also nominated for two Golden Globes and two Oscars. Such a success that over the years it has fueled hypotheses and speculations about the different scenarios of the film, which tells the story of Kevin McCallister, the 9-year-old boy involuntarily left at home alone during the Christmas vacation by his family to Paris. 🇧🇷 During his solitary sojourn, Kevin learns to take care of himself amidst various misadventures, managing to thwart a house robbery organized by two burglars who intend to loot several houses in his neighborhood during the holiday season.

1. The movie poster pays homage to Munch

The original poster for the film, which features protagonist Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, was conceived as a parody/homage to “The Scream”, legendary painting by Edvard Munch.

2. In the photo of Buzz’s girlfriend there is a man

One of the funniest moments in the film is when Kevin enters his brother Buzz’s room, a place inaccessible to him when his brother is home, and searches through the objects that are dear to him. From a trunk he also takes an intentionally uninviting picture of his girlfriend. In fact, a boy is depicted in the picture, precisely because the director, during the filming, realized that it would be impolite to make fun of the unattractive appearance of a girl. Therefore, the son of the film’s artistic director was chosen to play Buzz’s girlfriend in the film.

3. Joe Pesci never met Macaulay Culkin outside of filming.

“Keep the change, you filthy bastard,” is the famous line from the movie that Kevin watches, terrified, home alone. Not everyone knows that the movie, titled Angels With Filthy Souls, doesn’t actually exist. It was the director himself John Hughes film these scenes and date them for use in Home Alone. Inspired by a 1938 film titled Angels With Dirty Faces.

4. He entered the Guinness World Record

The film grossed $17,081,997 in its opening weekend, held the top position for 12 weeks, and remained in the top 10 until June of the following year. A triumph that made it the highest-grossing film of 1990 and achieved the Guinness World Record as the highest-grossing comedy in the US market.

5. All scenes are filmed in Chicago.

Paris airport? It is actually O’Hare International Airport. And those first-class seats on the plane to Paris? All rebuilt on a local high school baseball field. And the flooded basement? The scene was filmed in the same school’s swimming pool.

6. The McAllister house is a tourist attraction

The house you see in the movie actually exists and is located at 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka, Illinois, and all scenes except those shot in the bedrooms and on the first floor were filmed in this house. In 2012, the property sold for $1.58 million.

7. The tarantula on Marv’s face was real

Actor Daniel Stern, as the second bad guy in Ruins Marv Merchants, agreed to use a real tarantula, in one of the movie’s most hilarious scenes. However, in order not to scare the animal, Stern just imitated the incredible scream we heard in the film, as the sound was added later.

8. Robert De Niro turned down the role of bad guy Harry Lime.

The production and director Chris Columbus, before entrusting the role to Joe Pesci, proposed it to Robert De Niro, who however rejected the offer, probably because he did not consider it appropriate to shoot a comedy after participating in the cult film “these good guys”, by Martin Scorsese, of the same year.

9. Macaulay Culkin’s Brother Also Plays Cousin Fuller

There isn’t just one representative of the Culkin family in the cast. In addition to Macaulay as the protagonist, there is also Kieran Culkin, who plays Cousin Fuller. The two sleep together the night before the family “mess”, a punishment for Kevin, as Fuller often wets the bed. Kieran Culkin then had an acting career perhaps more prolific than that of his brother, in recent years he has participated, among other things, in the award-winning TV series Succession, appreciated all over the world.

10. The role of Kevin was written for Macaulay Culkin.

John Hughes custom-wrote the screenplay for Macaulay Culkin after hearing episodes of his difficult family history. However, before Culkin got there, the producers auditioned at least 100 other kids.
