LONDON, England – Musician Sam Smith turned heads in the striking black latex jumpsuit worn by the “Unholy” singer at the Brit Awards in London on Saturday night.
The signature jumpsuit, designed by Harri, featured inflatable arms and legs that quickly became the hottest look of the night, beating Harry Styles’ black velvet suit with its huge satin organza flower around the neck.
Smith’s look, which included black platform boots, had its fans, but it also inspired some to take to social media to joke about UFOs and Billy Connolly’s “incontinence pants.” Others wondered if it paid homage to one of David Bowie’s most memorable looks, the brightly striped jumpsuit designed by Kansai Yamamoto and worn by Bowie in 1973.
Smith’s clothing designer, Harri, told WWD that the look was meant to celebrate the natural shape and “the beauty of being yourself.”
“Sam has been getting a lot of hate comments lately about (his) body image after ‘Unholy,'” Harri said. “I wanted to create an image that people had never seen Sam before.”
Last week, Smith, who uses the pronouns she/she, praised hairstylist Ben Reardon on Instagram, writing that he’s behind much of what they’ve worn in videos and on red carpets over the years.
“Ben, your talent and vision are unparalleled in my life,” Smith wrote. “You have taught me so much and reintroduced me to art and creativity in ways I never thought possible. Thank you for helping me be brave and have fun at the same time. I love you and am honored to work with you every x day.”
