Puerto Rican urban music singer José Fernando Cosculluela was sentenced this Friday to three years probation for a pattern of sexist violence against his ex-wife, Jennifer Fungeniz.
Judge Marieli Rosario Figueroa, of the District Court of Humacao (East), made the decision after hearing the results of a report entrusted to the Probation Commission.
The reggaeton singer, known as “El Príncipe”, on March 21 accepted his guilt in 13 charges for violation of law 54 for the prevention and intervention of domestic violence, after reaching an agreement with the prosecutor’s office.
Violation of articles 6.09 (carrying a semi-automatic weapon without a permit) and 6.14 (aiming or shooting with a firearm) of the Weapons Act has been reported through this agreement.
Cosculluela was arrested on October 14, 2022, when Fungeniz reported that she was a victim of a pattern of domestic violence by her ex-husband.
At the time, the fire of a Fungeniz vehicle at the exclusive Palmas del Mar complex in Humacao was also under investigation, but authorities ultimately did not link the artist to this case.
Following his arrest, Judge Carlos Capó de Humacao found grounds for Cosculluela’s arrest and set him a $240,000 bail.
The judge explained that five charges of assault (Art. 3.1), three of aggravated assault (Art. 3.2) and five for the crime of assault by threat (Art. 3.3) were filed under Law 54, as well as two violations of Article 6.09 and 6.14 of the Weapons Act.
During the preliminary hearing of the trial last December, Cosculluela’s ex-wife said that the singer had abused her during her second pregnancy, was unfaithful and burned her clothes.
