Five nights at Freddy’s Director Emma Tammi revealed how a note from game developer Scott Cawthon changed the way the sinister animatronics were presented in the film. The new film is based on the video game series of the same name, centering on a security guard who must survive the night against ghostly animatronics. In both the game and the movie, the characters are revealed to be possessed by the spirits of murdered children.
To talk with strikeTammi explained how a note from Cawthon about the Five nights at Freddy’s The film made sure she brought a more innocent side to the characters. The director noted that despite their robotic behavior, the children still had an innocent side, something that is explored in the film through their relationship with Abby, Mike’s sister. Check out what Tammi had to say below:
One of the things Scott [Cawthon] In the early days when I joined the project, it was emphasized to me that the animatronics were harmless. The ghost children within them are innocent. Then of course they go into killer mode and that’s something completely different…
There is an element that Abby connects with that is not sinister, but completely pure. So we tried to find ways to show that as a kind of counterpoint to some of the scarier moments. It’s weird and fun. I mean, it’s funny and weird to see giant animatronics doing normal things like building a fort with a kid or something. I think we also saw an opportunity in the film to express that.
How Five Nights At Freddy’s balances horror and humor

Although the games it is based on focus more on horror than humor, the film adaptation shows a different side to Freddy and the other animatronics. When they befriend Abby, the pizzeria mascots become equally friendly and help her build a fortress out of tables and chairs without harming the human characters. Although it is later revealed that this is an excuse to kill Mike’s sister so she can join them, it shows that there is still a degree of innocence buried in their souls.
This becomes clear during the Five nights at Freddy’s ends with Abby revealing the truth about how William Afton killed her to the animatronics. When the children realize the identity of their killer, they attack him, causing his suit’s spring mechanisms to fail and slowly killing him. Although the boys still have their suits, they now seem to understand who their true enemy was.
While Five nights at Freddy’s 2 It has not yet been confirmed that it is possible for a sequel to further explore how Afton’s death affected the children’s minds. This could create even more moments that balance the fear of the animatronics with their innocence. Currently, Five nights at Freddy’s showed a depth to Freddy and his friends that gave the film a new humorous touch.
