Resume
- Batman realizes that the Bat-Signal is counterintuitive because it gives criminals his location and gives them time to commit crimes elsewhere.
- While the Bat-Signal is iconic, it has one major flaw: it lets criminals know where Batman is going, allowing them to operate elsewhere with impunity.
- Batman realizes that the Bat-Signal isn’t of much use, as it conflicts with his ninja stealth and reliance on fear.
From his Batsuit to his Batmobile, Batman has many classic symbols and gadgets, but the most iconic is undoubtedly the Bat-Signal. When a serious crime occurs or Gordon just wants to scare some criminals, the Commissioner will release the Bat-Signal into the sky to get Batman’s attention. Recently, Batman finally realized how counterintuitive the Bat-Signal really is.
As Batman trains to recover his memory after a bout of amnesia in the short story “Pygmalion,” by Guillem March and Arif Prianto Batman: The Bold and the Bold #7, at the end I see the bat signal in the sky. Still wanting to act as Batman despite his amnesia, he goes to the Bat-Signal to see what Gordon wants. This leads to an amnesiac Batman commenting on how the Bat-Signal was a potentially bad idea.

Because Batman values his secret identity, he can’t give the police an exact phone number or anything like that, but he has given criminals an accurate way to find out where he is. While the purpose is to scare criminals, it lets everyone know that Batman is busy at GCPD headquarters.

Batman’s Bat-Signal has been transformed into a deadly weapon
In direct current vs. Vampire, Batman’s Bat-Signal has just become a deadly weapon, as its activation is the perfect vampire killer in the dark universe.
Batman realizes that the Bat-signal tells criminals that he is busy.

The Bat-Signal has existed in the Batman mythos for decades, serving as a symbol of hope and a way to summon Batman. The signal is intended to warn criminals that Batman is on his way and citizens that help is on the way. While these are good ideas, the amnesiac Batman looked at this concept with fresh eyes and noticed a major flaw. While it’s certainly necessary to summon Batman, activating the Bat-Signal means Batman isn’t active on the streets; It targets the GCPD, allowing criminals to operate with impunity for a period of time.
When the Bat-Signal shoots into the sky, all the criminals know exactly where Batman is going. This means that criminals all over the city have plenty of time to rob a bank or commit another crime, since Batman is an employee of the GCPD. Even if you somehow know that a crime is happening in the city, you won’t be able to get there in time. This is a huge mistake considering what the Bat-signal is supposed to do. The goal is to scare criminals by telling them that Batman is actively moving through the city, but everyone knows where he is going.
Batman’s Bat Signal has a major flaw

On second thought, the Bat-Signal idea never made much sense. Batman is essentially a ninja who uses fear to terrorize criminals. To communicate with the police, he also uses a huge flashlight that announces his presence to everyone. While there’s no denying that the Bat-Signal is an iconic and important part of Batman’s history, Batman himself has pointed out that it’s actually pointless.
