With music that sounds like his origins and with the certainty that these are the rhythms he wants to bring to the world, José Domingo Zabaleta Villalobos, better known in the music world as Jhosy, has found in Afrobeat what he considers his ‘identity’. .” ”.
The Cartagena-born artist, one of the promises in this trend, has recently released songs like Cosita or his EP My First Time, in which he explores these sounds he has heard since childhood and which come together with his personal touch. .
In his short career he has achieved collaborations with Manuel Turizo, Beéle, Tostao and more that further his status as the promise of Caribbean music.
Speaking to EL HERALDO, the Cartagena native noted that “my family taught me a lot of that genre, which is tropical. My father loves music, he really loves lagenato. Of course I also listened to Champeta, which is also Afro. I also started listening more to what Afrobeat is and let’s say that’s where I started to discover what my identity is.”
In this sense, they collected sounds, creating a solid identity that represented their Afro and Caribbean culture, until this led to the EP ‘My first time’.
“We are also coming up with another project, which will be another EP, a mix of genres that I listened to growing up, since I can remember, such as lagenato, cumbia and merengue. We will see a fusion of Afro and those genres, so it will also be something very beautiful, which enhances the culture, what the Afro is,” he added.
Supported in the Caribbean
For an emerging artist, being a prophet in his own country is perhaps the most difficult thing, and Jhosy has achieved that little by little. He says it is in the Caribbean that he feels the support of his people most, especially in cities like Barranquilla. .
“The truth is difficult. But here in Barranquilla they always welcome me with open arms, literally. He likes my music very much. Let’s just say I’m quite picky about others. But I feel like I’ve built a family, you know? And that means a lot to me. “Many people write to me.”
