The self-portrait can be admired from Tuesday to 24 July as the centerpiece of an exhibition about the work. There is, for example, a gallery with self-portraits by Rembrandt. According to the museum, no 17th-century painter made as many self-portraits as he did. The visitor also receives information about the production process of the work and can watch a biographical film about the famous painter.
According to the museum, this painting was on his easel when he died. “She tends to see an old man soon after. But despite her gray hair and aging skin, she doesn’t see her end coming. On the contrary, the master was at his best here and drew himself honestly and strikingly.”
The museum has already exhibited Vincent van Gogh’s The Yellow House (Street) from the Van Gogh Museum and Johannes Vermeer’s “The Milkmaid” from the Rijksmuseum. After Rembrandt, the series concludes with the ‘Tower of Babel’ by Pieter Bruegel the Elder of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen. The series of masterpieces was created after the museum cut ties with the Russian Hermitage Museum due to the war in Ukraine.
