Theft at TEFAF was not the first: it was already stolen from the art fair

Four people robbed a jewelry stall at TEFAF art fair in Maastricht on Tuesday afternoon. It’s not the first time something has been stolen. In fact, something has already been stolen several times. The art fair is also known as the “candy shop for art thieves”.

From Van Gogh to very expensive diamonds: once a year the MECC in Maastricht is full of exclusive works of art, exclusive antiques and design. It is therefore not surprising that art thieves watch the fair with great interest and sometimes steal something there.

2008: diamond necklace

In the 2008 edition, a diamond necklace worth 1.2 million euros was stolen and two Mexican women were arrested. They were sentenced to 15 months in prison. They committed the theft with two Colombians, but were acquitted for lack of evidence.

2010: diamond necklace and platinum ring

Diamonds remain popular with thieves: they are then removed from jewelry and sold separately. As a result, stolen jewelry is often difficult to find; they will not be resold in their original condition. In 2010, a diamond necklace and a platinum ring – again with diamonds – were stolen from British jeweler Hancocks. The total value of the jewels is more than 860,000 euros.

2011: three necklaces and two brooches

There was also a theft in 2011. At the time, it was five jewels, all with diamonds. Details about this were not disclosed by the police. 82-year-old Milanese jeweler Gianluca Buccellati is a jewelry designer. “Oh, I’ve been robbed so many times,” she said. crime scene† It is up to the stands themselves to provide extra security. 2022: more gems

Jewelry was stolen from jeweler Symbolic & Chase on Tuesday afternoon. Police are not giving details about what the thieves stole. Two people in their twenties from Belgium have been arrested, the police are still looking for the other two involved.
