The royal couple made two buildings available to Ukrainian refugees through Donation Royale, a public institution that manages many lands, castles and other buildings: one in Brussels and the other in Wallonia.
“King Philip and Queen Mathilde are also very concerned about the fate of Ukrainian refugees,” said Jan Smets, head of the Royal Endowment. “This social component is very important for both Donation and the royal couple.”
Accommodation is available from April. According to the president, they must first be furnished and refurbished. “The main purpose of these residences was to make them available to social institutions to accommodate low-income people, a mission that fits so well with what we want to achieve with the Royal Endowment.”
Last Wednesday, King Philippe visited a new registration center in Brussels for refugees from Ukraine, which opened on Monday. A total of 3,729 people registered in the first two days. Of these, 720 people have applied for a home.
