Balmoral Castle, home of Queen Elizabeth II, hosts the hand kiss ceremony for the first time

It is the first time in the history of the reign of Elizabeth second that the hand kiss ceremony takes place in the Balmoral Castleinside Scotland, instead of Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle, as is the custom. The British call it ‘kissing hands’and refer to the official moment when the Queen meets the new british prime minister. The term literally means “kissing hands” and refers precisely to the gesture made by the Prime Minister to the Queen.

Queen Elizabeth II waited for the Prime Minister for the first time Liz Trussnewly elected leader of the Conservative Party in drawing room of Balmoral Castle. in the afternoon of September 6, 2022 the hearing took place at which Truss was invited to become prime minister and form a new government. The queen broke with the tradition of meeting the new prime minister in London for reasons of mobility.

Balmoral Castle

Balmoral Castle is the Scottish royal residence, used primarily as a hunting property. The historic 14th century residence became royal residence only in 1848 when the queen victoria and the Prince Albert they decided to spend the summer there, a use continued also by Queen Elizabeth II. The property extends over 260 square kilometers and is not considered an official royal residence, which is located in Edinburgh, but a royal family private residence and the queen does not hold any official public activities there: that is why holding the hand kiss ceremony on 6 September is considered such an exceptional event.

The construction of Balmoral Castle dates back to 1390per Sir William Drummond. Was King Robert II of Scotland to acquire the property to make it a hunting property. Balmoral Castle is indeed surrounded by 300 hectares of wood and more than 200 hectares of pastures. The variety of flora and fauna present in the area today, together with the royal residence, represent an important tourist attraction In Scotland.

It is the fifteenth time that Queen Elizabeth II has participated in the hand-kissing ceremony with a new British Prime Minister. On his ascension to the throne he met Winston Churchill while Truss is the prime minister to be nominated for Balmoral, second only to Lord Salisbury in 1885. Interiors with green rugs and sofas, gilded moldings and stone fireplace maintain the charm of the historic site.
