Queen Elizabeth’s death at age 96

just two days ago the queen elizabeth she last appeared in public during her meeting with new Prime Minister Liz Truss. Leaning over the years, yes, but always composed and smiling, leaning on her trusty cane. No one imagined that she would be the last image of the long-lived sovereign, who died on September 8, 2022 after seventy years on the throne. Most of her subjects were born when Elizabeth II was already on the throne and her image is familiar throughout the world. The last memory we will have of the sovereign is, fortunately, a coincidence of fate, with the dress she loved most.

Queen Elizabeth’s Country Outfit

In many ways, Queen Elizabeth was the last great icon of the 20th century and her style has remained in the collective imagination. There are two images we all know of Queen Elizabeth: the official one, with a colorful coat and matching hat, and the ‘country’ one, with the inevitable Barbour and rubber boots. The queen devoted her entire life to duty, but her heart remained in the countryside, the place that made her happiest, among her beloved dogs and horses. Because, in reality, Elizabeth should never have become queen: she was the daughter of the junior branch of the Windsors, grandson of the heir to the throne. She probably would have become the happy wife of a naval officer, Philip, if fate hadn’t made Uncle David and Wallis Simpson cross paths. Because of an American divorcee, King Edward renounced the throne and Elizabeth’s fate took a completely unexpected turn: suddenly her father was king and she the young heiress.

But it was in the countryside that Elizabeth really found herself, with the Hermès scarf tied under his chin, his waterproof jacket and muddy boots. Tartan, an ancient symbol of Scottish nobility, became their leisure uniform: cardigan, blouse and plaid skirt. It’s no secret that the queen adored the Scottish castle of Balmoral – the place where she significantly died – and that she adored horses. Some say that in another life she would have been perfectly happy raising racehorses and living like a mistress of the countryside, between housekeeping and hunting.

That’s why it’s somewhat poetic that the last image of the queen is the one that best represents her: with pearls, the pearl gray cardigan and the plaid skirt, the uniform of her happiest days.
