Elections 2022, center-right reserves the presidency of the Lazio region

If, along with the political elections, last Sunday he had also voted for the regional in Lazio, the center-right would have won. Data in hand, the coalition of Giorgia Meloni, Matteo Salvini and Silvio Berlusconi obtained 44.82%, against 26.12% for the centre-left. A game with no story. As for the list vote, Fratelli d’Italia took 31.44%, Forza Italia 6.87%, Liga 6.11%. As for the center-left, the Democratic Party obtained 18.32%.

The data, however, also say something else. In Lazio 1, including the city of Rome, the centre-right obtained 37.6% against 31.5% for the centre-left. While in Lazio 2 – the provinces of Lazio – the center-right exceeded 50%, settling at 53.14% against 20.64% on the left. The Democratic Party, however, was in coalition with the Green and Left Alliance (3.89%), + Europe by Emma Bonino (3.33%) and Civic Commitment by Luigi Di Maio (0.58%). Outside of the centre-left coalition, the 5-star movement (14.8%) is the third pole of Carlo Calenda and Matteo Renzi (regional average of 8.54%: 11.09 in Lazio 1 and 5.95 in Lazio 2 ). If all parties in the progressive area were united, the game for the regional elections would be open and would be resolved with the contestation of the last vote. The theme of alliances dominates a Democratic Party torn apart by controversies and internal clashes that also involve the Capitoline group.

“The problem was not the wide field. But not have. Divided we all lose», writes on Facebook the governor Nicola Zingaretti, recently elected to the Chamber. “This unitary vocation that made us win in so many territories – he adds – We will have to discuss to rebuild a new proposal”. And the objective of bringing together Pd, M5S and the third pole in view of the regional elections is the objective of Bruno Astorre, regional secretary of the DEM, who again proposes the “Lazio Model”. For the past two years, Zingaretti has ruled with a Pisan majority formed by the broad field. Astorre recalls that if the entire center-left had joined the political elections, the alliance in Lazio would have reached 49.41%. “United you can win”, the final synthesis of Astorre.

But the regional secretary ends up in the crosshairs of the reformist base. In the plurinominal college Lazio 2, the M5S surpasses the Pd and is the second party after the FdI. In fact, Giuseppe Conte’s party comes in at 15.46%, while the Democratic Party stops at 15%. “While in the city of Rome, thanks to the work of the new Gualtieri administration, the Democratic Party is above the national average, in the province and in all other capitals the result is bad and without possibility of appeal – says a note from the Reformist Base, currently headed by Lorenzo Guerini – We must carry out a very quick analysis of the vote to move immediately to an urgent, mandatory and serious reflection on the part of Lazio’s management team to understand and remove the causes that determined these disastrous results ».

To freeze the Democratic Party is also Giuseppe Conte, who does not close and does not open for an alliance with the Regionals. “We came from a Sicilian experience in which we realized that there were no conditions to move forward with the Democratic Party and we said that what happens in Rome cannot fail to have an effect elsewhere – says the president of M5S – Each situation must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. In this case, we will also evaluate the Lazio region, there is still time, but we set a very high bar everywhere. We have accumulated a lot of experience about the behavior of the Democratic Party leadership team and I want to warn you: from now on it will not easy to talk to us.” All to be verified then that the third pole accepts an alliance with the 5 Stars. Complicating matters is also the fact that outgoing secretary Enrico Letta, who has bad relations with Conte and Calenda, will manage the elections (and the choice of presidential candidate). Nazareno’s objective is to find a candidate who can start a dialogue with possible allies. Calenda, in turn, has already said that it does not consider plaus support for vice president Daniele Leodori or an alliance with the M5S who doesn’t want the waste-to-energy plant in Rome. Time is running out. From the moment of his proclamation, Zingaretti has one month to resign as president of the Region, dissolve the Council and call for elections within ninety days of his resignation. At the latest, the vote could be on February 12. Will so little time be enough to heal the wounds in the center left?

Meanwhile, in the center-right Matteo Salvini asks to speed up the choice of candidate for governor. “I will ask the entire center-right – says the secretary of the Northern League – to immediately identify, that is, within a week or so, the candidate for governor” of Lazio “to avoid persecution” that harmed the center-right in the last municipal elections. The choice will likely be up to the FdI, but the coalition will have to discuss the candidate’s profile: a politician or a high-level civic person (in the past, the hypotheses of Red Cross President Francesco Rocca and Credito Sportivo President Andrea Abodi have been advanced . ).
