Government, EU signals to Italy: no rush for budget law

The center-right’s victory in the elections did not provoke any violent reaction from markets and international powers. On the contrary. A senior European Union official, responding to a question about Italy’s timing for the presentation of the Draft Budget Document in the EU, assured the government that it will likely be led by Giorgia Meloni: “The elections are a routine event in the European cycle of coordination of fiscal policies. And there are standard methods of dealing with them. Italy will form the government, it will need a time that the EU will fully respect. We can wait. And when the government is in place, the budget discussions will begin.”

“I am absolutely convinced that Italy will respect its commitments and do whatever is necessary to ratify the reform of the ESM. Against the risk of fragmentation and spread widening, I think there are instruments and, first of all, RFF reforms and investments that specifically aim to address the root causes of fragmentation. And this remains the key to dealing with these risks and it is really important that it is used,” the EU official added, ahead of the Eurogroup meeting on Monday.
