Sieve Europe: in 2022, illegal entries into the EU increased by 73%

Frontex data: the Balkan route is growing, transits are also increasing in the Mediterranean

Europe sifts more and more. In the first ten months of this year, 275,500 irregular entries were made at the European Union’s external borders, 73% more than in the same period last year and the highest figure since 2016.

This follows from preliminary estimates by Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. The Western Balkans route remains the most active migration route to the EU, with 128,438 detections in the first ten months and 22,318 in October alone, almost three times more than a year ago.

However, again between January and October, the Central Mediterranean route saw a 48% increase in the number of irregular border crossings, which rose to 79,140, making it the second most active migration route to the EU.

In October, EU member states recorded around 36,500 irregular crossings, 47% more than in the same month last year. “Due to the high number of arrivals – admits Frontex – there may be delays in communication and the final numbers may be more consistent”.
