She has just run for Democratic Party secretary, but Elly Schlein already wants to change her name. The mayor of Bologna, Matteo Lepore, wants the denomination “Democratic and Labor Party”, an idea with which the former vice-president of the Emilia-Romagna region agrees: “I think that the proposals that come from Lepore and Bologna are very interesting. Proposals that as a candidate I commit to collect and evaluate. The theme of the name offers a starting point. How work must once again be the central pivot of the Democratic Party, is an issue in which mistakes committed in the past have produced a disconnect. The other pivot must be the climate crisis.”
Schlein, interviewed during an event in Repubblica, discusses the dem’s future alliances, winking at Giuseppe Conte’s 5 Star Movement: “My Democratic Party is a party that must have a clear identity. As for alliances, I am among those who have worked hard for the wider field. Alliances are made on issues of inequality, climate and work. Let’s make a better opposition together instead of competing to see who makes the best opposition alone.’
Finally, a clarification of their positions on the war in Ukraine and on military support for Kiev to fight against Russia: “We must continue to provide all forms of necessary support to Ukraine. I am close to the world that animated the pacifist demonstration in Rome, but when the path of sending arms was chosen in March, I am among those who thought it was right, otherwise, after 3 weeks we would have seen Putin rewrite the European borders with the armies”.
