Mattarella rings the alarm clock for von der Leyen: “The maximum price of gasoline is realistic”

The debut of La Scala in Milan was also an opportunity for the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to meet with Ursula von der Leyen, at the top of the European Commission. During the meeting, which was also attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, after recognizing the ceiling on Russian oil, established by the EU in recent days, Mattarella said he was “concerned” about the negative repercussions for families and companies in Italy due to the high price of gas and called for a redefinition of the cap that was “realistic and effective”. President von der Leyen, for her part, underlined “the importance”, taking into account the different energy matrices of the various Member States, of having a mechanism capable of sending a unambiguous message abroad with positive effects on the markets.

The Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, also spoke about the energy issue during the hearing on the programmatic lines of his ministry. With regard to the gas price ceiling, “we are thinking of 5 days and a spread of around 30-40 euros”. In practice, the price cap would be triggered when the price change is more than 30-40 euros for more than 5 days. The minister explained that the group of 15 countries defending the maximum price “is thinking about the European Commission’s proposal, which went from a ceiling of 275 euros per megawatt-hour to 220 euros. The request made by Italy and Greece is 160 euros ».
