Cabinet: Stop recruiting foreign students

Education Minister Dijkgraaf is calling on universities and technical colleges to stop actively accepting foreign students for the time being. Complying with a request from the House of Representatives by call.

In a letter to educational institutions, the minister talks about the positive aspects of international student traffic. But he says the negative effects, such as teachers’ workload and housing problems, are too great.

“It can also put pressure on the sustainability, affordability and quality of the Dutch higher education system in the long run,” Dijkgraaf writes.

Dijkgraaf speaks of a “joint task” of school authorities and the government, and wants a “complete stop” until next year when new agreements are reached on the approval and award of scholarships.

Exceptions are possible under strict conditions for social areas with labor market bottlenecks. This applies, for example, to health, science and education.
