“Regressive utopias can leave us with nothing”: Alejandro Gaviria

Although the text of the health care reform is not yet publicly known, with what little the Ministry of Health has revealed, the first critical voices have already been raised, even from the national government itself, such as that of the Minister of Education, Alejandro Gaviria, who served as health minister in the government of Juan Manuel Santos.

Gaviria recently noted that any reform should be based on practical knowledge.

“Too ideological looks often do damage. Those regressive utopias that promise to solve everything can leave us with nothing,” he noted.

Gaviria also recently called on the government to implement the reforms in a context of consensus and open debate.

“The real change happens when there are similarities, when societies agree. Reforms need dialogue, discussion, debate and scrutiny. This is the only way to build legitimacy and avoid major mistakes,” said the also former health minister.

Congress President Roy Barraras also spoke about health care reform, asking not to end the system.

“The current system has been under construction for 30 years and still needs to be improved. Reform yes, but without endangering the health of everyone,” said the legislator of the Historical Pact.
