New environmental law postponed for the fifth time to January 2024

The enactment of the Environment and Regional Planning Law was postponed for the fifth time. Housing and Spatial Planning Minister De Jonge thinks it would be wiser to let the law not take effect until January 2024. He told the House of Representatives that municipalities and businesses will have ample time to prepare this far-reaching law.

The Environmental and Spatial Planning Act aims to make adjustments to spatial planning easier and faster, for example, when issuing building permits for residential areas, shopping malls, commercial areas or road construction. A total of 26 laws were brought together in the fields of water, soil, air, nature, infrastructure and buildings.

The Senate already approved it in 2016, but the law is still not enacted due to implementation problems, especially in the field of ICT. For example, a building permit application is executed via a new digital meter and the system still gets stuck. This was the reason for the previous postponement in October.

The technology now works, writes De Jonge to the House of Representatives. However, the minister thinks it would be wiser to delay the law again to ensure nothing goes wrong with the next implementation.
