Party congresses and upcoming elections are a common combination. Today, ahead of the local elections on March 15, there are at least three: CDA, PvdA and GroenLinks. So something is at stake: State officials have a huge impact on road and residential construction, as well as environmental and nitrogen policies.
At the CDA, members are presented with a major change of course on inequality. It aims to bring the city and the country closer together. PvdA and GroenLinks are voting on next steps for party unification.
CDA starts the day with campaign activities in the provinces. In the afternoon, members and party leadership discuss the election message. In any case, it’s about the plan to tackle inequality. “The Netherlands should not be a country that is only good for people who are already well off,” party leader Heerma said.
It will also be about nitrogen measures. CDA executives in the states are fighting against the nitrogen policy of “their” cabinets. To accommodate the fans, CDA boss Hoekstra has already moved away a bit from the strict requirements. He speaks in the afternoon.
in the same building
PvdA and GroenLinks hold their electoral conventions separately but in the same building. In the new Senate, which will be elected by new MPs in May, both parties will return as one faction.
The parties are working towards unification step by step because, in the words of party celebrities last year, “the ‘red’ struggle for a just society and the ‘green’ struggle for a sustainable society are one and the same thing”. They also think that together they have more political power.
Today members are allowed to speak again and joint campaign activities are discussed. At the end of the conference day, PvdA and GroenLinksers will listen to the speeches of party leaders Kuiken and Klaver.
