The commission to investigate the situation during the corona crisis will continue to work with the same structure. Members of Van Haga (Group Van Haga) and Van Houwelingen (Democracy Forum) also remain on the board. News leaked to the media last week that part of the committee would ask the couple to resign today, but that didn’t happen today.
According to Chairman Mariëlle Paul (VVD), no one is resigning and the entire committee is working “hard” on the research mandate. According to Paul, it was a “good conversation” today. The delegation met for hours in a room in the House of Representatives.
There was anger in the committee last week: some members felt that Van Houwelingen and Van Haga had broken their agreement to no longer participate in the Corona debate because they were now members of the investigative committee. Speaking at such discussions, other members of the NRC committee admitted that they thought the two should go. Other members of the committee are still disturbed by this leak.
President Paul confirmed to NOS that this leak is being discussed today. Reluctant to comment further on content-related questions, Paul says it’s agreed that this won’t happen anymore. Other members of the committee also declined to comment.
“All Voices”
Paul has chaired the committee since the previous chairman resigned. Khadija Arib (PvdA) left the Assembly and Committee after allegations regarding her previous role as Speaker of the Assembly. These allegations came to light when it became known that he intended to chair the investigative committee. Arib resigned from his deputy and therefore commissioner, citing a smear campaign and a political showdown.
At the start of the Corona Committee, Arib said there should be room for “all voices” in the committee. The composition of the committee was considered by some to be notable for hosting the Democracy Forum as well. The party sees Corona as the flu and opposes the vaccine policy. The Van Haga Group and PVV have also repeatedly criticized the political decisions taken during the epidemic.
