Alessandra Mussolini New Champion of the Gender Battle: The Passport Protest

The MEP Alessandra Mussolini renounced the pass that belongs to the MEPs because it did not contain the mention of the gender ‘others’, considering it, therefore, discriminatory. “In the travel document called the EU pass, I hope that in the field relating to gender, the X can be entered immediately, i.e. for ‘other’ (other), or nothing. Because they have fingerprints, they have faces, don’t ask me what gender they are because I don’t want to say it”, protested the Forza Italia MEP at the European Parliament in Brussels.

“Yesterday I went to ask for the pass, which is a very important document because it gives you a kind of diplomatic immunity, privileges, the possibility of transiting throughout the EU and around 100 countries”, said the MEP and nephew of Benito Mussolini. “I took the fingerprints, the face photo, which is then scanned, and then they asked me to tag male or female. I said I thought there was an X for ‘other’ or ‘prefer not to mention’. But it’s not like that”, underlined Mussolini, who continued: “So this morning I went to the administration to ask if there are more options for those who don’t want to be defined. They told me no and that this is a problem. At that point, I went back to the place where visas and passes are made, explaining that I don’t intend to insert male or female, but the X. They told me that I can’t because it’s illegal, because the data is taken from the Italian passport”.

“Excuse me – Mussolini raises his voice – is the EU something that is supranational and really serves to advance and overcome barriers? How many times do we test against gender discrimination and so on? So I was told that it can’t be done, you can’t enter the X, and that even if I had an X in my Italian passport, they still couldn’t accept it because it doesn’t exist in the protocol. And at that point, then, I asked to be annulled, because if I always accept the conventions, we will not move forward”. “Then I sent an email saying that this is a gender discriminatory attitude and that is why I do not intend to receive a pass from the EU”, specified Mussolini, who had already fought for LGBTQ+ rights in recent months.
