The moment of truth in Congress

The extraordinary sessions began in the Congress of the Republic and with them some important discussions for the country.

As announced by the national government itself, the agenda they will promote in the next 19 weeks will feature about 34 initiatives between bills and legislative acts, but the positions and discussions will focus on the so-called social reforms and the National Development Plan (PND), which began to be discussed in the context of extraordinary sessions. In addition, the budget addition will be discussed in these weeks to steer the resources of the tax reform.

The controversial pension, labor and health reforms will be considered by the Seventh Committee in regular sessions, though the executive confirmed that the health care reform will be tabled between February 14 and 20.

“It will be presented in the coming days, I will give that scoop. We are in the final version of the articles, we are looking at every detail, the whole transitional regime, which is perhaps the most complex,” Alfonso Prada told media.

On the labor and pension side, as explained by Gloria Ramírez, they will be settled in March as they finalize their socializing with the various sectors.

Other projects

In the first committee, both in the Chamber and in the Senate, the debate on agricultural justice, the use of cannabis and the recognition of the farmer as subject of rights continues.

In the same way will come the complicated debate on the reform of the penitentiary code presented today by the Minister of Justice, Néstor Osuna, which aims to humanize the penitentiary. In addition, this legislative cell is discussing the modernization of the police and the political reform, which has divided the alternative parties of the governing coalition.

The second committee will discuss initiatives aimed at consolidating the Inter-American Convention against Racism, Racial Discrimination and All Forms of Intolerance; as well as the protocol against the smuggling of migrants by land, sea and air.

Meanwhile, the Third Committee and the Fourth discuss the National Development Plan and budget addition.

In the Fifth Committee, the controversy about entertainment events with animals, the ban on fracking, the National Environmental System and the Mining Code continues.
