But who is Galeazzo Bignami? He was born on October 25, 1975 in Bologna. The historical face of the Bolognese right is the son of Marcello Bignami. His father was in the national administration of the Italian Social Movement and later the National Alliance, and served as municipal and district councilor between the mid-1980s and early 2000s. “Galeazzo Bignami never made it right into Bolognese. He never got in, mainly because he was born there, primarily thanks to his father, Marcello,” he says on his biography website.
Galeazzo Bignami has been a member of the Bolognese right since his youth: he joined the Youth Front at the age of 14 and became regional secretary of the National Action University Front (Fuan) three years later. He became national director of University Action in 1996 and regional secretary of Emilia-Romagna Youth Action in 2001. It has also been a member of the national executive since 2005. Bignami was elected councilor of Zaragoza county at the age of 18 and became a city councilor in Bologna in 1999. He was head of the National Alliance group in the municipality of Bologna from 2001 to 2004, and in 2004 he was elected chairman of the budget commission and reconfirmed city councilor.
From Forza Italia to Fratelli d’Italia
He joined the Freedom People in 2009 and was elected district councilor the following year. He joined Forza Italia in 2013 after Pdl disbanded and was reaffirmed as district councilor in 2014. In the 2018 political elections, he was elected to the House of Representatives from the Forza Italia list in the Emilia-Romagna-01 multi-name constituency. In Montecitorio he became a member of the special commission for the review of urgent actions submitted by the government, and in June passed to the 6th finance commission. In September 2018 he became the regional coordinator of Forza Italia in Emilia-Romagna and has been a member of the permanent simplification commission since November. However, in August 2019 he resigned from his position as coordinator and moved to Fratelli d’Italia.
Another controversy about him dates back to November of that year: Fratelli d’Italia with city councilor Marco Lisei posted a video on Facebook with the names of foreigners residing in some housing estates in the Bolognina district. The footage is later removed, but the subject of a parliamentary investigation and a complaint to the privacy guarantor. In the 25 September 2022 elections, Bignami was re-nominated as leader of the Brotherhood of Italy in the Emilia-Romagna-02 multi-name constituency and was elected to the Assembly. He was named Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport by the Council of Ministers on 31 October.
