He justifies Italy’s work, considering himself satisfied “with the results obtained by Italy”, with the very important “advances made in some particularly delicate matters in the discussion”. At the closing press conference of the extraordinary European Council, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni explained that she “asked the Commission to present a proposal on a European fund dedicated to strategic sovereignty. This element enters the conclusions of the Council. However, we are aware that a fund like this takes time and we don’t have time. That’s why we ask for flexibility in using existing European funds to full use”.
The prime minister also intervenes on the Macron case when answering a question about tensions with the French president: “I confess that I find some Italian readings a bit provincial. The theme is not frost, problems, the theme in my opinion is that the Italy is a central enough nation in Europe to have to say when you don’t agree with something about the past that it was enough for us to be in a picture and that was enough to describe our centrality.” “These are political relations, it seems to me that they are counted as if we were in high school, as a personal problem”, added the prime minister.
“If I had been invited” to Paris for the meeting with Zelensky, “I would have advised against holding that meeting because we are interested above all in giving a message of unity on Ukraine”, adds the prime minister, explaining that “it is it’s not easy for anyone to deal with the issue of Ukraine with our public opinion. People are scared, worried, and what we do to support Ukraine, taking it for granted, in terms of consensus, may not even be the best solution. But we have all privileged what was right versus what was useful for our personal consent”.
“What is right and important yesterday was the photo of the 27 European countries with Zelensky, because it is the strongest message that can be given. Anticipating this unity with a meeting that, by favoring the internal public opinions of some, risked the general weakening public opinion on this subject. In my opinion it was politically wrong, I didn’t share it and I feel I should say that”, explains Meloni.
