Clarity on “peak vices” in nitrogen dossier only in April

Again, there are delays in dealing with the nitrogen crisis. It is only in April that Minister Van der Wal will be able to clarify in his letter to the House of Representatives which companies are supposedly the biggest helpers and what the government plans to do with them.

“This is an incredibly complex issue, it just takes some time,” van der Wal said in a statement after the Cabinet. The minister estimates that around 3,000 farmers and other companies are releasing large amounts of nitrogen, which has a huge impact on nature.

To determine which companies this applies to, we look, among other things, how much and how a company emits. The location of the company, for example its proximity to a Natura 2000 site, is also taken into account. Van der Wal says it takes time. He doesn’t think it will have big consequences.

The law will be discussed next week.

Despite the delay, the government remains committed to its goal of reducing total nitrogen emissions by 50 percent by 2030. The bill, which includes this target and other nitrogen regulations, will be published on the government’s “consultation” page next week. Then anyone can answer that.

In November, the cabinet announced that it would handle peak loads. The sooner a solution is found to this, the sooner farmers who cannot obtain a permit without their own fault, called PAS detectors, can find a solution again.
