Residents of Lazio and Lombardy vote to choose the new president of the Region, but the specter of abstention hangs over the polls. There are about 13 million eligible voters who, between today and tomorrow, are called to go to the polls to renew the regional councils of two of the most populous regions of Italy. Only the demographic dimension of Lazio and Lombardy can only lead, after the result of the vote, the main parties to a broader reflection.
Not just in the new general political geography of the boot, but also in the balance of power between teams. Mainly in most. However, concern is growing from the vote about a possible sharp drop in turnout not only with regard to the September policies, but also and especially with regard to previous administrative elections. In the last regional elections in Lazio, in 2018, 66.46% of the holders voted, while in Lombardy the percentage exceeded 73%. In recent days there have also been some difficulties, especially in the main centres, in recruiting tellers.
Meanwhile, in the centre-right, attention is focused on the possible leap forward by the Brothers from Italy, a number that is growing in polls. The data observed with greater interest is that of Lombardy, historic stronghold of Lega and Forza Italia: a possible affirmation of Giorgia Meloni’s party to the detriment of the two allies could force the coalition to recalibrate the national balance. Nobody questions the stability of the government, which could even be strengthened, but an executive increasingly driven by the FdI could create new friction between the allies.
As for the Regions, Attilio Fontana’s new mandate at the head of Pirellone is considered probable by surveys by the main opinion polling institutes. And also in Lazio, the affirmation of the center-right is approaching, in the face of the Pd and the M5S that presented themselves separately in the Center, giving the green light to the return of a center-right exponent to the leadership of the Region of Lazio, after the Zingaretti era lasted ten years. Almost resigned to a prediction that, on the eve, seems difficult to subvert, the General Staff of the Democratic Party is forced to turn its attention to the interior. But the coincidence of the regional elections with the approaching primaries of the party led the dem to a brief internal truce. Indeed, the four candidates to take Enrico Letta’s place at the secretariat were united in supporting Pierfrancesco Majorino in Lombardy and Alessio D’Amato in Lazio. But after 3 pm tomorrow, with the polls closed, the wind of reckoning will blow again.
