“The outcome of the regional elections is overwhelmingly negative.” This is the beginning of the long post published on Facebook by Goffredo Bettini, a strong man within the Democratic Party, to comment on the results of the polls in Lazio and Lombardy. The former deputy in particular hits hard on the need to build an alliance between the opposition forces, with the return of pressure to form the broad anti-center-right camp: “Abstentionism has reached a level of danger for democratic maintenance. The reasons are far and near. The fact is that without a broad field of democratic forces, the Democratic Party can hardly be saved. But our defeat in the competition with the Italian right is certain. Those in the Democratic Party have shown impatience and even derision about the need for alliances, particularly with 5-Star, should also reflect. Conte’s Movement, without a credible and unified political perspective, manifests a substantial and harmful uselessness. As well as the Third Pole, in situations where he decides to separate himself from us and play a game alone”.
“Now – continues Bettini on the social network – we need to reflect seriously and there is a need for an immediate resumption of the political and social struggle. We have congress. In these last days, let us not miss the opportunity for a serious confrontation. It is not serious to argue that those responsible for the defeats of recent years are Zingaretti, Orlando, Franceschini and myself. This is the leadership group that reversed the catastrophic course of Renzi’s Democratic Party. And in two years it brought the Democratic Party to more than 22%, placed it at the center of the country’s government, won regional elections and in the large Italian municipalities. That’s the truth. And it is the fall of this managerial group that led to a phase of aggravation of the crisis of the Democratic Party and conditions in Italy. They’re not the best, I never said that. But they are the ones, I repeat with the results in hand, that form part of the best tradition of our party. Naturally along with many others. We do not judge candidates, however, by those who support them. Because – Bettini’s final opinion – otherwise the discussion on renewal or not, especially in the South, would be bitter, because he is notoriously in favor of Bonaccini in those territories where the most ‘sparkling’ part of the Democratic Party is located”. Who knows what the other DEM leaders will think…
