Regional elections, Calenda blames the failure on voters: “Trusting the vote is a mistake”

A series of hooks that end up placing the blame on citizens and not on the world of politics. This is the essence of the interview with the leader of the Action, Carlo Calenda, after the result of the 2023 regional elections that saw, for example in Lombardy, the Third Pole candidate, Letizia Moratti, finish third at a stellar distance from her opponents , without even reaching 10%. The former minister vents in an interview with Corriere della Sera: “We lost. The regional is a very difficult vote for us. Preferences matter and we depend on an opinion vote. The worst possible condition for anyone who wants to break bipolarity. I am not looking for an alibi, I confess that I did not expect the result in Lombardy in the terms in which it was outlined. I didn’t even expect Fontana to take even more, in percentage terms, than five years ago. Can we say that the outgoing president governed well? No, you can’t say.”

Calenda claims the choice of candidates and points the finger: «We chose the two regional advisers, Moratti and Alessio D’Amato in Lazio, who best managed Covid to lead two Regions, entities in which the budget is almost completely absorbed by Health. And nobody cared. Attilio Fontana and Francesco Rocca might be better candidates? I don’t believe. If you vote like in the Palio di Siena, if the vote is reliable, the candidates are worth little. But I do politics precisely because I want to undermine this system that leads to ever-increasing abstentions with voters increasingly divided between Guelphs and Ghibellines and the country’s decline. I do not give up”.

In short, were the voters wrong? The question that spontaneously arises to the interviewer. And Calenda has no doubts: “Yes, I’m not afraid to say it. It’s the Italian curse, you vote by belonging”. The solution that Calenda proposes is that of the centrist single party: “Of course. In fact, the only lesson I take away from these elections is that the single party cannot wait any longer. Just wasting time. We leave in March, whoever is there is there. I accept no further delays.”
