The first thought I had? The sense of responsibility in view of the enormous commitment we assume with citizens. This feeling prevailed over the joy of victory. Francesco Rocca has just finished the round of interviews with the TVs at his headquarters in the Palazzo delle Fontane in Rome, on the Eur, and speaks with The weather next to the camera housing.
Earlier, during the press conference, he had answered a question about the first initiatives to be taken in the first Council: «The first resolution will certainly be to revoke the resolution that gave two thousand hectares of agricultural properties to the municipality of Rome, at a rate surreal,” he explained.
The reference is the attribution to Campidoglio of the management of the estates of Castel di Guido and the Tenuta del Cavaliere. Then, “definitely an intervention in waiting times in emergency rooms”. So, always on the sidelines, we ask what is the cornerstone of a problem like the “stretcher lock”. And he replies: “Put all hospitals in the Lazio region online, both public and accredited private”.
Rocca’s arrival at his electoral headquarters goes a little further than expected. At 6 pm, when it was expected about an hour earlier. A well-earned result, with the hall full of politicians and journalists alike. There is the front row of Fratelli d’Italia, already present in the minutes following the arrival of the first ballot boxes.
The Minister of Agriculture Lollobrigida, and then again Giovanni Donzelli and Fabio Rampelli. He will not arrive, because Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is struggling with a severe cold (in any case, her sister Arianna lurks). But the graphics that many party members start posting on social media around 4 pm, with the prime minister’s face and the phrase “Vittoria”, accompanied by images of Rocca and Fontana, give an idea of the consolidation of results in times very short. “Italians are a nation of intelligent people who evaluate the political proposal and give a clear signal”, says Lollobrigida, passing between a notebook and a microphone. “The left comes out. super-defeat”, observes Rampelli.
And, in fact, what you breathe in the Palazzo dell’Eur is not an air of suspense or euphoria, but simply of expectation in relation to something that is written. Some candidates for regional elections appear, outgoing councilors like Laura Corrotti and Antonello Aurigemma. Close to Rocca’s arrival, the audience fills up. The center right is all there.
The regional coordinator of the League Claudio Durigon and the Roman secretary of Forza Italia Maurizio Gasparri arrive. In blue, the low turnout reads: «The weakness of the opponents discourages voters». The Northern League observes: “Now we have to govern well for the citizens, for the voters and also for those who did not go to vote. I think it’s right to represent everyone.” There is also Lorenzo Cesa, leader of the UDC, who vigorously shakes Rocca’s hand and congratulates him.
So Rock. The ascent to the stage, after a day spent at home, is the game that ended after an electoral campaign used to respond to the poisons and insults about his past and his profile as a leader. Reporters immediately raise the main issue, namely the Board: this, he says, will be “part of a joint discussion with the entire coalition, last time it took about twenty days. We have to leave immediately, we can’t waste a day.”
However, he does not speak of names and proxies. However, he expects to complete the composition in less than twenty days. “I’ll certainly be watching the healthcare very closely, but I haven’t made a decision yet,” he explains. Health was one of the main points of conflict in the electoral campaign. “It has to be solved”, says the president-elect, “it is distant and it mortifies the citizens”. As for the huge number of abstentions, this “underlines that 10 years of center-left has alienated citizens. We will work to restore confidence and participation”. This is, therefore, the starting point of a new political story, a few months after the inauguration of a government that faces a very difficult political agenda. Arriving like this was likely, but not obvious .
