After voting in Lazio and Lombardy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni opts for silence. Still shaken, the prime minister misses the meeting with the anniversary ceremony of the Lateran Pacts. But the given “hot” line remains unchanged: a “clear victory” that “reinforces the Government’s work”. And that above all strengthens the position in the coalition of the Brothers of Italy, which resulted in the first party both in Lazio – by detachment – and in Lombardy. Also strengthened by the result, therefore, Meloni seems to open space for the allies, who celebrate the newly found unity of the victorious center-right, but also take the opportunity to relaunch their own editions, and put pressure on the prime minister about the program and the executive’s next choices. .
“Even the government comes out of these elections stronger: the vote of the voters lives up to the attempts to divide our coalition”, writes the leader of Forza Italia, Silvio Berlusconi, on social networks, while stating that “within the center-right, Forza Italia is numerically and politically decisive. The Knight then reiterates what for the Azzurri are “the battles of all time”: tax reform, simplification of bureaucracy, reform of justice “in the sense of guarantee”, increase in pensions”, is the your list, to which is added the notice: »See you soon to decide our work program together«. Beyond words, however, there is total harmony to be recovered, above all in foreign policy, after Berlusconi’s “out of line” assessments of Ukraine. Also because the censorship came from the European People’s Party, whose group of MEPs “firmly rejects Silvio Berlusconi’s statements about Ukraine. They do not reflect our political line. Russia is the aggressor, Ukraine is the victim. We will not give in to the narrative of Putin and Ukraine can count on our full support.”
Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the League, Matteo Salvini, tries to play it down, in fact “I will not comment, everyone is free to express the reasoning, so foreign policy has a clear signal”, he interrupts and then says “I am happy with the victory of the centre-right, of Giorgia, of Silvio and of Attilio Fontana. We always win together, we never win alone”. Even Carroccio’s secretary, therefore, exalts unity, but with particular dedication “to those who say that the League is dead and finished. Then the citizens vote and the Lombards are concrete. The people are sovereign, it is a wonderful result”. Then he “mortgages” one of the next issues on the government’s table, namely the future of Rai and a possible change of top management: “We need to reflect on the license fee, on how much Rai costs Italians, on wages maxims and on external agents”, he announces, and on “a renewed Rai” that “takes account of the electoral result, of Sanremo and of the controversies”. Theme that adds to the game of nominations in the large state branches that await the government in the coming months, in which the positions of strength within the majority will be decisive.
Positions of strength that change even within the opposition. The Pd accomplished both in Lazio and Lombardy, where instead both the 5 Star Movement and the Third Pole fared poorly. The prevailing opinion among the dem seems to be that “the M5S and the Third Pole will never gain anything without the Democratic Party”, to quote the candidate for the secretariat Stefano Bonaccini, or that in any case “divided we all lose”, in the words of Goffredo Bettini, who admits: “The situation with alliances has become very complicated”. In fact, Giuseppe Conte, Carlo Calenda and Matteo Renzi don’t seem ready to reopen the wide field table. The director of Italia Viva breaks the silence and registers a “worse result than expected”, but recommends: “No uncertainty regarding the Third Pole project. In fact, now is the time to relaunch”, because the best is yet to come! ».
In front of Cinco Estrelas, however, Conte’s line continues to be the one announced: the leader of the M5S «worked all day to define the list of provincial coordinators of the M5S: one more piece of the new territorial structure of the pentastellati. The list is ready and will be published on the 5 Star Movement website», inform M5S sources. There is little willingness to comment on the defeat even among parliamentarians. «We have to structure ourselves in the territory and relaunch our themes. Start over for them, not for alliances», evaluates a pentastellata source, and «we’ll see after the Europeans». And in fact the feeling – according to the rumors of the Transatlantic – is that another election round, that of the European elections next year, will be necessary to definitively dissolve the jigsaw of alliances in the center-left.
