That’s right, “in our surveys we identified a significant percentage of citizens who didn’t even know there was voting”. Eumetra researcher Renato Manneheimer seems almost surprised to claim that many Lazio and Lombards were not even aware of the electoral round to choose their own region’s governor. During the episode of l’Aria che Tira, hosted by Myrta Merlino, Bocconi’s former teacher in Milan first blames an election campaign run “for insiders only”. So clearly there are the usual problems that lurk behind our country’s now rampant abstention. And that is why “the dissatisfaction with the policy, the distance felt in the institution of the Region, the fact that we only voted in September”. But these, says Mannheimer, “are all factors that politicians must take into account in order to gain citizens’ trust.”
In any case, the center-right also dominated the regional elections, as a result of the deep split between the various parties that make up the opposition. So, coming to the theme of the “defeated”, argues the data specialist, the palm of the worst is all the so-called “Third Pole”, which at least by the numbers was never the third. In particular, “Letizia Moratti is the one most defeated, since from the first polls she seemed to enjoy a greater consensus”.
The reason? “Right-wingers didn’t vote for her because they considered her a traitor.” Therefore, “Calenda’s gamble to drain the votes of moderates on the center-right also failed”, adds Merlino. The irrefutable fact is that even among the Calenda-Renzi voters, only 56% voted for Moratti. A disaster thus commented on by Manneheimer’s guest: “It is clear that the intention was not to trust her”.
