Water crisis, Luca Zaia’s proposal: a Marshall plan against drought

A Marshall Plan to Combat Drought. In an interview with La Stampa, the governor of Veneto, Luca Zaia, intervenes in the debate on the water crisis that affects our country. According to Zaia, it is necessary to intervene in the cultural aspect and in the improvement and efficiency of infrastructures. The water crisis, in fact, is destined to get worse especially in the coming summer months. For Zaia, it is necessary to implement a “Marshall plan” to deal with this emergency: “We need great national coordination. This one about water is a challenge that forces us to throw our hearts beyond the obstacle: 15 years from now we have to imagine the worst but if we think now it will be life insurance. Italy without water would also end in terms of identity, I am thinking of food and made in Italy», says the governor.

And what does she have in mind? «At least three things to be done as quickly as possible: the first is of a cultural nature, we have to start explaining in schools that water is not an infinite resource and we have to think as if we were dealing with rainfed agriculture; the second is practical: creating a network of reservoirs that become our water reservoirs. Both natural and artificial ones must be cleaned, I am thinking of the quarries, there are thousands of them. Last fundamental aspect: think preventively, as the Israelis do, creating arid cultures, imagining that the climate can be tropicalized and partially desertified». “That is, more than half of our water resources are lost along the way because we have a sieve network. So we need to invest more in infrastructure, to reach the crops with the tubes that release the drop». He also spoke of sea desalination plants. Are the costs sustainable? «For a cubic meter of desalinated water, the cost is 0.47 cents. The sea can be a huge resource».
