Initial prognosis: greatest BBB with PvdA/GL combination

The BoerBurger Movement won 15 seats in the Senate, according to a preliminary estimate by the ANP news agency. That makes the BBB the biggest so far, with the Labor/GreenLinks combo again winning 15 seats. VVD is expected to win 10 seats.

All votes were counted in three provinces. The newcomer BBB has become the largest of Zeeland, Drenthe and Flevoland. In Drenthe, Caroline van der Plas’ party received 33.5 percent of the vote.

The preliminary forecast of the election results was long overdue. But after more than 85 percent of the votes were counted, the first estimate was released shortly after 5:30 am.

The victory of the newly arrived BBB marks a major setback for the coalition parties VVD, D66, CDA and ChristenUnie. According to an online poll by Ipsos of nearly 2,500 voters, dissatisfaction with the cabinet emerged as a main reason for voters.

According to estimates, the cabinet will eventually get 24 of the 75 seats in the Senate. The four parties have 32 seats in the Senate.

The BBB is poised for an electoral victory even greater than the Democracy Forum in 2019. Then, Thierry Baudet’s party suddenly became the strongest party with 14.4 percent of the vote. Caroline van der Plas’ party is currently going 19.4 percent.

The BBB has become the largest party in most provinces, and it suggests that the votes of dissatisfaction – the “protest vote” – mostly go to this newcomer. The BBB’s campaign focused heavily on the nitrogen crisis.

“Normally people stay at home when they no longer trust politics, but today they have shown that they no longer stay at home. How did BBB boss Van der Plas make their voices heard, after coming out of the polls for the first time last night?

According to the ANP news agency, the vote count is taking a long time due to a combination of several factors. Several municipalities reported to the Ministry of the Interior that the ballot boxes were too tired to process ballots. The ministry then decided to temporarily suspend the count and resume it later in the day.

This year, high turnout, along with the turnout of many parties, played a role and led to larger ballots. Municipalities also faced a malfunction in the phone software used.

The results of the state elections are still available. The map below shows the results per municipality.
