“After 29 years, the Christian Democrats can rise from the ashes like the phoenix. Many attempts have been made, perhaps too many. But this may be the right time. At least listening to Gianfranco Rotondi, who never gave up Leader of the Green è Popolare, elected in the latest policies on the list of the Brothers of Italy, he dreams of rebuilding the White Whale once and for all Questioned by “Il Tempo”, he begins with these words: “There is a lot of confusion under the Christian Democrat sky, our mission is to restore peace”.
How to make? Step one: Arm yourself legally. “We have taken legal advice, so it will be impossible for anyone to make any objections.” Rotondi never forgot “the judicial fury of so-called DC animators” he had to deal with over the years. Thoughts quickly run to Flaminio Piccoli, former president of DC after Aldo Moro and one of the main exponents of the Dorotei current, who died in 2000. sprouted like mushrooms – says the deputy – Piccoli told me: ‘It’s the curse of Moro’. I like to remember those words today (yesterday was the forty-fifth anniversary of the massacre in via Fani, ed.)”.
Rotondi, who founded Christian Democrats for Autonomies in the mid-2000s, sees this as a historic mission he cannot escape. “I wasn’t infected by the conspiracy, but they can’t help but recognize that in all these years there was a very strong hand of steel that prevented the return of DC. Today we want to do it again, I in particular having been one of its last representatives cool”.
“I’ll put the name,” he adds, “since it’s used by me as the founder of DC in 2004.” The symbol with the crossed shield, on the other hand, will be brought as a dowry “by Lorenzo Cesa’s UDC”, which “has shown availability”. There are actually three promoting parties. “There is also the historical DC of Renato Grassi”, reveals Rotondi. It won’t be an easy challenge to take home. As the leader of Verde è Popolare recalls, “twelve formations claimed the name” of the Christian Democrats. The legal armor that Rotondi is preparing will serve to discourage potential suitors: “Legally speaking, we will have ammunition available capable of deterring all the braggarts.”
The reference electorate, obviously, will be the moderate ones, with an eye also on the popular Democratic Party militants dissatisfied with the new direction embodied by Elly Schlein. But the revived DC will be firmly anchored in the centre-right. This particular centre-right led by the first female prime minister in history. “We don’t just want to intercept the nostalgic wave-explains Rotondi-When Meloni traces a dialogue between conservatives and popular people he is sending a clearly Christian-Democratic message”.
