Additional funds for the new infrastructure will be spent on the comprehensive maintenance of bridges, viaducts and roads in the coming period. Construction of new roads or other infrastructure projects has largely come to a standstill, mainly due to nitrogen problems. Therefore, no further construction work is permitted for the time being.
Minister Harbers does not want to leave the money allocated for infrastructure and water management on the shelf. All types of bridges and viaducts in the Netherlands are beyond their useful life and need a general overhaul. Heavier shipping routes also put more strain.
End
“Travelers should no longer have to deal with major outages or bridges breaking on their own,” Harbers says. It wants to make the existing infrastructure “more stable” so that passengers no longer suffer from broken bridges or locks.
A total of about 5 billion euros per year are available for upcoming maintenance. At the moment, it is not yet clear which new projects will not take place. This is due not only to the nitrogen crisis, but also to rising costs and a shortage of personnel. Research should show what is possible and what is not.
