“Surrogacy is more serious than pedophilia”: what MP Mollicone said on TV

Is it surrogacy? “I think it’s more serious than pedophilia”. The brothers of Italy MP Federico Mollicone commented on Omnibus at La7 about an interview with former Senator Pillon about a fully leased womb. Fdi MP Pillon, arguing that surrogacy should be judged like pedophilia, said he was “making a legal comparison” and stated that the parliament would decide on this issue. However, this practice remains a “serious crime”, indeed, Mollicone added that it is “more serious than pedophilia” that is “extremely serious and should be prosecuted”, but in the case of surrogacy “we are dealing with one person”. It’s as if he wants to choose some “child”, like the color of the house or the decoration of the furniture, and this “is happening a lot in the West, not in Italy yet”.

Hence the bill submitted by Fratelli d’Italia to make surrogacy a “universal” crime. Pregnancy on behalf of a couple is already prohibited in Italy (the penalty ranges from 3 months to 2 years), but in many other countries the situation is quite different. For this reason, according to Fdi, the legislation in force today should be amended by stating that the penalties will be applied even if they have been committed abroad.

“Many viewers don’t realize what this is about,” Mollicone said. “It’s a matter of commodifying human life, and the right to have children has nothing to do with it,” he added, “because there are scheduled clinics.” And so, he said, it’s an “economic problem,” such that “eugenics is really a trade-off.” According to the MP, this is ultimately “a kind of racism, they are not going to buy the southern hemisphere genetic heritage, but to look for Caucasian genes”.
